April 1st, 2009: The Sky Is Not Falling

by Josh on Mar.27, 2009, under Uncategorized

There have been numerous media reports about some super-worm that will be activating April 1st.

They are of course speaking of the Conficker Worm.  And the claims?

Media HYPE and inaccuracies as usual.

(Conficker variant C, which has infected the least number of computers of all the Conficker variants, will start poling  500 out of a potential 50k domains for updates, instead of the 250 it is currently contacting.)

For a quick and easy FAQ, check out F-Secure’s Report.

For a great technical report on Conficker.C, check out SRI’s writeup.

Internet Explorer 8: InPrivate Browsing

by Josh on Mar.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

IE8 was just released today.  Check out the list of new features.

One feature that caught my eye:

InPrivate Browsing

Browse the web without saving your history with Internet Explorer 8’s InPrivate Browsing. Now you can shop for that special gift with confidence knowing your family won’t accidentally find out or use a shared computer without leaving a trace.

Did anybody else laugh out loud when they read the description of this new feature?

Come on, we aren’t that stupid.

Everybody knows what this feature is really for–And it ticks me off that Microsoft is pandering to that kind of destructive behavior.

By the way, those who use accountability software such as Covenant Eyes or X3Watch, don’t need to be concerned–These programs are alot deeper in the computer system, and as such, won’t be affected by this new IE mode.

Firewall Script: Your Next Silver Bullet

by Josh on Mar.12, 2009, under Uncategorized

Don’t you love the outrageous claims makers of security products proclaim?

Check out this one:  Firewall Script

“Firewall Script offers unparalleled protection against web based attacks for any website supporting PHP.
Never before has this level of protection been available without costly routers or hardware.”

Yes, because we all know that  routers, you know, the Layer 3 devices, block PHP, Layer 7, (Application Layer) attacks!

“100% protection guaranteed
When properly configured, FWS can block any attacks on your site, guaranteed.”

What is their great formula?  Enumerating Badness.

Check out what Marcus Ranum has to say about why Enumerating Badness is a dumb idea.

Ok, I’m done ranting and raving…
